SATURDAY July 29: Riverwood – first National Star Party: (8:00 – 10:00 pm)

Canada 150
The Riverwood Conservancy, Earthshine Astronomy and Space Science Organization and the Mississauga Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada present the first National Star Party at the RIVERWOOD CONSERVATORY at 8:00 p.m. on SATURDAY July 29.

On Saturday July 29, we’re holding the first National Star Party! Astronomy clubs across the country are holding a star party on the same night to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary since Confederation.

A short lecture called “The Sky Tonight” will be presented at 8:00. 8:30, 9:00 and 9:30 pm in Chappelle House, rain or shine. All are welcome. Announcements will be made at the telescope site announcing the talks.

Weather permitting, members of the Mississauga Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada will be setting up telescopes to show members of the public spectacular views of the Universe. Observing will take place on the green in front of Chappelle House. The event starts at dusk is free and open to everyone. Jupiter, Saturn and the Moon should be visible, along with perhaps a nebula or two! Get some good shots of the Apollo moon landing sites with your cellphone cameras! We should get a good look at some colourful double stars.

Total Solar Eclipse: Monday, August 21 2017

On Monday, August 21,  a total solar eclipse will be visible across the United States. The eclipse will be visible as a partial eclipse (where only part of the sun is covered) from Canada, but that view pales in comparison with the darkened skies under a total eclipse, so make plans to travel South for a good view. For those who can’t make the trip, we’ll be setting up scopes at Riverwood for public viewing.

NASA have published a great 1 minute video of what will happen during this solar eclipse, showing the relative sizes of the Earth and Moon – give it a look! NASA: Flying Around The Eclipse Shadow
