June Speaker Night

June 19 @ 20:00 - 22:00

Talk Synopsis

Quasars: Faster and More Furious

Professor Patrick Hall’s research group at York University will present a sampling of their past and current work on quasars – supermassive black holes at the centres of distant galaxies.

Patrick will introduce quasars and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and talk about a quasar he found almost 20 years ago with some similarities to JWST’s famous “Little Red Dots”.

Halima will talk about quasars with changing reddening along our line of sight, some which are changing slowly and some which are changing back and forth between different levels of reddening.

Ariana will talk about a quasar with an accelerating outflow. Quasar outflows must accelerate to reach their observed speeds, but it’s rare to see it happening.

Lucas will talk about the quasar with the fastest outflow ever found at ultraviolet wavelengths, moving at 30% of the speed of light.
