We’re Run by Volunteers
Our volunteers are the people who make the RASC Mississauga Centre a success.
Consider becoming a volunteer to help make our center even better. The time commitment varies from a few hours on a regular basis to just a few hours per year.
Students! You can likely count your volunteer hours towards your required community service time.
The Mississauga Center invites members to volunteer for the following positions:
- Astrophotography – Help to promote astrophotography within the centre, to offer training and support. There is an Astrophotography email forum.
- Awards – Help to seek nominations for, and present centre awards to members – to recognize contributions to the centre and achievements by members
- Beginner Members – Help to introduce new members to the centre activities
- Constitution – Help to maintain the Centre Bylaws. To suggest changes to the Bylaws to Council which, when approved, are sent to the membership to be voted on at an Annual General Meeting in February. This committee also makes suggestions for changes to the Policy Manual.
- Council – Participate in the decisions about Centre finances, organization and future plans. These are 2 to 3 year term commitments.
- Education / Public Outreach – Help to organize and run programming to provide astronomy education to members of the public. This may include presentations to schools and youth groups.
- Finance – Help to oversee the Centre finances – set up the annual budget, handle the centre banking. The Centre VP and Treasurer are on this committee.
- Information Technology – Help to maintain the centre’s online resources – web site, email lists, social media accounts
- Light pollution Abatement – Help provide education to the public on the issues associated with light pollution
- Membership – Help to provide support to members regarding their membership
- Newsletter – Help to publish information for the membership on centre activities and news.
- Nominations – Help to seek out candidates for council and committee positions.
- Observing – Help to promote observing programs and encourage members to work on obtaining Observing Certificates.
- Program – Help to organize and run the centre’s Friday night Speaker and Potpourri meetings
- Social Media / Promotion – Help to promote the centre and its program via social media and other marketing media.
- Telescope Loan – Help to organize and run the telescope loan program for members.
- Merchandise – Help to obtain and sell various type of merchandise with centre logos (shirts, hats)
- Picnic – Help organize and run the annual picnic
