Title: Canada at Asteroid (101955) Bennu

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission recently grabbed a sample from the near-Earth asteroid Bennu.  Bennu is a roughly 500m diameter carbonaceous asteroid. Canada contributed to this historic and scientific milestone with the contribution of one of the instruments on the mission.  The OSIRIS-REx Laser Altimeter (OLA) provided a global model of the asteroid with a resolution approaching 5cm.  This talk will provide an overview of the mission and its discoveries with an emphasis on the latest results from the OLA instrument.

Michael Daly is a Professor, York Research Chair holder, and the Director of the Centre for Research in Earth and Space Science in the Lassonde School of Engineering at York University.  He was the lead engineer for Canada’s first instruments to operate from the surface of Mars and is the lead scientist for the Canadian Laser Altimeter on NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission.  Mike has been honoured as the recipient of  2018 CASI McCurdy award and the naming of asteroid (129973) Michaeldaly.
